Golden Coaching Moments #1
This will be a column dedicated to those moments for a chess coach when work doesn’t really seem difficult, when a coach fully understands why he does what he does…The times he enjoys the “Golden Moments”.
His name is Dian Dian and having turned 5 in April, to me he was a bright little guy with huge charisma and energy, affection and a happy personality…basically, a normal 5 year old.
His parents brought him to me to test if he will like chess and with the hope to also give him an avenue to channel his enormous energy into and maybe develop his patience and thinking skills.
It was clear from the start that Dian was enraptured with chess and he soaked up everything he was taught and usually finished his homework before even leaving my house.

I found also that it was clear that this boy is extremely smart and talented and absorbs the concepts quickly…that is, when his quick mind isn’t racing ahead of the current position trying to show me a “good move”!
.
Here is an example of Dian’s talent:
In the position above, it is clear to any experienced player that the game is already over and that black is lost, but Dian had learnt how to move the pieces one or two weeks before this game and was playing the white pieces against his Dad! (ok, I admit Dian made white AND blacks first 15 odd moves, giving his father a lost position to start with).
From the diagrammed position Dian played 1.Qxa7 which to the naked eye and any beginner seems to just “forget” about the unprotected knight on d6.
His father thought for only a couple of seconds and said “hmm, can I just take this?” And captured the “unprotected” knight on d6 with his rook (as we see below) 1…Rxd6.
Dian now thought for a few seconds while giving his usual lively and cute commentary and played 2.Bc5 before announcing to his Dad “You’re in BIG trouble now!”, and indeed he is…
This move forks (attacks two or more pieces at once) the two black rooks and leads to a crushing victory in the near future (although Dian’s technique in winning requires work haha).
Now the use of a simple fork might not seem breath-taking, but coming from a boy who has just learnt to move the pieces two weeks before and now develops his pieces, castles the king and knows how to attack, capture AND checkmate,AND has just turned 5, is a sign of true talent and a future potential star.
I sent him home armed with a chess set, his homework and a copy of the great “Fritz and Chesster” software, and his mother has reported to me that he seems to have channelled all of his energy into chess and spend hours on Fritz and Chesster between lessons, draws chess related pictures and even plays games against himself.
Here is one such masterpiece of his “chess art”: ![]()
And here is Dian caught in the act of creating it:
Another thing I found very cute and interesting was that Dian likes to read my chess books when he comes over and as he cant read too well yet, reads them like story books and looks at the pictures and diagrams before saying something like “The bishop can eat the PAWN!!”, or “Brendan, look there’s a PIN!”.
This gives me confidence that in the future with this type of mind, Dian will not need to be pushed but will be instead nurtured towards becoming a very strong player….he already has the talent AND the enthusiasm.

Above is Dian browsing over the “San Louis 2005” chess tournament book while watching cartoons, I HAD to get a picture!
.
Teaching Dian has been a very satisfying experience thus far and I have watched him change from a constantly moving “jitterbug”, into a still high energy little boy, but who can sit quietly and listen now, and more importantly….is learning how to think!.
